Facts About Zoysia Grass
JUNE & JULY ARE BEST MONTHS TO PLANT ZOYSIA
SEED!
Zoysia
grass
seed or grass plugs grow a beautiful lawn or turf with a fine to medium textured leaf and the thick cushiony feel of lush carpet. But don't let this tough grass fool you, it actually requires less mowing, watering
and little if any chemicals to survive making Zoysia grass a very eco-friendly grass. All of this whilst running weeds and other grasses out of your lawn area. You see Zoysia grass grows
differently than most other grass types. Rather than growing tall with seed heads, Zoysia grass spreads to form a dense sod by growing stolons or 'runners' thus expanding in multiple
sideways directions rather
than up!
Zoysia grass can be established from
Zoysia Grass Seed or Zoysia Grass Plugs, both available at Seedland.com. We have developed this site to help you chooses the best Zoysia grass type for your grass project, lawn, sports fields, golf courses and more.
ZOYSIA SEEDS - LAWN
PLANTING RATE 1 to 2 LBS. PER 1000 Sq. feet Zoysia Grass is
a resilient and persistent grass that can be successfully grown in a variety of climates and conditions. Zoysia is a warm season grass that will survive in climates from the upper warm tropical season areas, north to areas of the cool season zones, depending on the variety.
For instance, Zenith Zoysia grass is known to survive as far north as Chicago. Please see our Zoysia grass adaptation map.

Zoysia Grass Benefits
- Low water Consumption - The root system of Zoysia grass is deep as well as extensive thus requiring little if any irrigation.
- No need for chemicals - Zoysia is naturally resistant to pests and disease, thus no need to expose your family, pets or the environment to chemicals. Plus an established
Zoysia grass lawn is so thick with deep roots weeds are choked out -thus no need for harmful weed killers. In the event that your Zoysia lawn or turf becomes stressed and pests do invade
you will find Zoysia grass to be resilient to injury that may accompany most chemicals.
- Reduced mowing - Due to the lateral growth of Zoysia there is slower upwards growth. Most people find that Zoysia requires up to 2/3 less mowing than other grass types.
- Heat and Cold tolerant - Zoysia grass thrives in heat and does not winter kill. Note: Zoysia grass will go dormant turning a golden brown when the first winter
killing frost arrives. Zoysia is one of the first grass types to come out of dormancy and 'green up' in the Spring when soil temperatures reach around 50°.
- Traffic and Wear tolerant - Once established Zoysia grass has an almost uncanny ability to repair itself as it grows in all directions laterally. Also, due to it's
high density sodding, Zoysia is a good choice for Southern athletic fields and golf courses as well as high traffic lawns in the areas of Zoysia adaptation. Removal of cuttings after mowing will reduce thatch problems that
may arise.
- Salt tolerant - Zoysia grass is salt tolerant making it a good choice for coastal areas.
- Animal waste tolerant - Zoysia is more tolerant of animal urine and feces than other grass types - but keep in mind there is no grass that will survive constant exposure to pet waste.
If this is an issue try to keep the soil pH around between 6 - 7 by liming the soil.
- Shade tolerant - Zoysia grass is somewhat shade tolerant in the Southern areas of adaptation as long as the soil pH is between 6 -7 and it receives 2 to 4 hours of direct sunlight a
day.
- Erosion control - Once established, Zoysia grass is great for slopes and other high eroding areas.
Zoysia Grass Seed & Grass Plugs Available From Seedland
Zoysia is a warm season grass that can be grown further north than many of the other warm season grasses. It makes one of the most beautiful lawns
with a carpeted appearance when fully established. - Below:

Seedland also sells high quality Zoysia Grass Plugs that are 3" X 3" in diameter and are individual
grass plugs with developed root systems. Zoysia Lawn Grass Plugs from Seedland are a popular
option to replacing a cool season grass with a quality Zoysia grass lawn. Eventually the Zoysia Grass plugs will spread, take over the cool season grass and will establish a full Zoysia
lawn. It may not be a successful endeavor to try this method with warm season grass as Zoysia is a warm season grass and the two would just compete for resources having the same
period of growth. This situation would possibly not make for a full Zoysia lawn and may in fact result in a lawn that has mixed species for years before the Zoysia may overtake existing
warm season grass.

Zoysia NOT Recommended |
As you can see in the adaptation map above, Zoysia Grass Types Are:
- BEST ADAPTED FOR LOCATIONS SOUTH OF MICHIGAN IN YELLOW & GREEN AREAS ON MAP ABOVE.
- NOT RECOMMENDED IN COLDER NORTHERN AREAS -- STATES SHOWN AT TOP OF MAP - Light brown areas
Read more about adaptation area for Zoysia Grass for Zoysia grass.
Note: Zoysia will go brown (dormant) with frost or freeze and will remain that way until above 70 ?+ air temps return in spring which can
be as late as May in the more Northern areas. That makes it brown (dormant) about 6 months in these Northern areas of adaptation.
Establishment of Zoysia Grass Lawns
When planting Zoysia Grass seed or grass plugs a weed and grass free seed bed should be established in the beginning. Later, after Zoysia has established, the aggressive dense
growth will crowd out weeds and other grasses. Zoysia grass varieties have different textures ranging from coarse to fine. Newer varieties can now be planted from seed, which in the past were only
propagated through sod, sprigs and plugs. Here is a Picture of a
Zoysia seedling at 18 days old to help you identify your new Zoysia grass.
Note: Planting Zoysia Grass from seed is only recommended for new lawns - If planting into existing lawns you should use grass plugs. We recommend
Empire Zoysia Grass Plugs -
Other
grass plug varieties are also available.
SEED USE NOTICE: Please note that we ONLY recommend Zoysia seeds for use in bare soil areas.
Planting seeds into existing grass has a HIGH FAILURE rate. If planting into an existing lawn (grass and/or weeds) we recommend that you consider using
Zoysia Grass Plugs instead of seeds. Germination of grass seed is difficult to achieve in low light / shady areas. Use
Zoysia Grass Plugs in these areas also for best results. |
Establishment time for Zoysia Grass plugs vs. planting Zoysia Grass seed - Lawns planted with sprigs or plugs may take up to two years to fully develop into the thick density that a Zoysia lawn is capable of producing.
Zoysia grass seeded lawns
will be quicker to establish than sprigs or plugs and under ideal conditions can be established in five months.
Spreading by stolons and rhizomes, the growth pattern of the leaves makes Zoysia Grass suited for higher traffic locations. Zoysia grass withstands heavy usage after full establishment. High density sodding makes Zoysia well suited for use on baseball fields, golf course fairways, and lawns during summer
growth months or in tropical climate areas. The slow vertical growth of Zoysia grass makes for a lower maintenance lawn, athletic field, or gold course fairway. Zoysia grass can form thatch but doesn't attract as much disease and insect damage as some of the other warm season grasses. Removal of cuttings with each mowing should
reduce thatch problems. Zoysia has good drought resistance once established and the salt tolerance to grow exceedingly well along warmer coastal communities.
